Google Shopping free listings: a guide for UK shops
Google Shopping free listings for UK shops: setting up Merchant Center, the product data and delivery settings you need, fixing errors and getting seen.

Google Shopping free listings let UK shops show their products on Google’s Shopping tab and other Google surfaces without paying for ads. To get them, you create a Google Merchant Center account, verify your website, set up your UK delivery costs, and send Google a product feed with accurate details for each product. As of October 2026, new Merchant Center accounts are opted in to free listings by default.
Below is a step-by-step setup, plus the things that most often stop products from showing.
Where free listings appear
According to Google’s Merchant Center help, as of October 2026, free listings can show in places such as:
- The Shopping tab in Google Search.
- Product results and rich results in Google Search, with price, availability and reviews.
- Google Images and Google Lens.
- Other surfaces including YouTube, Google Maps and Gemini, in some countries.
Google doesn’t guarantee that any product will show. Like normal search results, it depends on how well your product matches what people search for and the quality of your data.
Free listings vs Shopping ads
Both use the same Merchant Center account and the same product feed.
- Free listings
- Organic product results. No cost per click, but less control over when you appear.
- Shopping ads
- Paid placements managed in Google Ads. You choose budgets and bids, and pay when people click.
Many shops start with free listings, learn which products get attention, and add ads later. Setting up properly for free listings means you’re ready for ads too.
Step 1: create your Merchant Center account
- Go to Google Merchant Center and sign in with the Google account you use for your business.
- Enter your business name, country (United Kingdom) and website address.
- Add your customer service contact details.
- Verify and claim your website, so Google knows you own it. Your shop platform may help with this, or you can add a tag or use Google Search Console.
Step 2: set up delivery for the UK
As of October 2026, Google’s help says delivery information is mandatory for the UK. You can add it in Merchant Center’s delivery settings, or send it per product in your feed. Include:
- Your delivery cost, or the rule (for example, free over £40).
- Handling time: how long before you dispatch.
- Transit time: how long the courier takes.
- Your daily cut-off time for same-day dispatch.
Keep it in line with what checkout actually charges. If your site says one price and Merchant Center says another, products can be disapproved.
Step 3: add your returns policy
As of October 2026, Google treats return policies as optional but recommends adding them, as they can affect whether shoppers buy. You can set the return window, whether returns are free, return methods, any restocking fee and how long refunds take. Link it to the returns page on your website.
If you sell to different countries, each country can only belong to one return policy, so set them up per market.
Step 4: send your product data
Your product feed tells Google about each product. As of October 2026, Google lists these as required for free listings:
- ID: a unique code for each product, such as your SKU.
- Title and description.
- Link to the product page and image link.
- Price and availability (in stock, out of stock, pre-order).
- GTIN or MPN: the barcode or manufacturer part number, where one exists.
- Brand, where one applies, and condition for used or refurbished items.
- For clothing: colour, size, age group and gender.
Most shop platforms can create a product feed for you. Merchella creates Google Shopping product feeds from your products, so you don’t have to build a spreadsheet by hand.
Step 5: check free listings are switched on
New accounts are opted in by default. For older accounts, check the Free listings option in Merchant Center’s marketing settings and turn it on if it isn’t.
Step 6: fix the issues Google reports
After your feed is processed, Merchant Center flags products that need attention. Common problems:
- Price mismatch: the feed price doesn’t match the product page, often after a sale starts or ends.
- Availability mismatch: listed as in stock but sold out on the site.
- Missing identifiers: no GTIN or brand where Google expects one.
- Image problems: watermarks, promotional text or placeholder images.
- Website not claimed or delivery settings missing.
- Policy issues: some product types have extra rules, so check Google’s Shopping policies for your category.
How to get your products seen
Once you’re approved, the quality of your data decides how often you show up.
- Write titles like searches: brand, product type and key details. “Acme Steel Water Bottle 750ml Insulated, Black” beats “The Explorer”.
- Use clean, clear main images on a plain background, with extra lifestyle shots on your site.
- Keep prices competitive and accurate. Shoppers compare side by side.
- Show reviews. Product ratings can appear with listings once you have enough reviews and send them to Google.
- Show delivery honestly: free or fast delivery can appear on your listing.
- Add structured data to product pages, so Google can read price, availability and reviews directly from your site.
Measure what free listings bring
Merchant Center shows clicks and impressions for free listings. In your analytics, free listing visits usually appear as organic traffic from Google. Look at which products get clicks but don’t sell (often a price or delivery problem), and which get no clicks at all (often a title or image problem).
In short
Create a Merchant Center account, verify and claim your website, set up UK delivery (it’s mandatory) and returns, and send a product feed with accurate titles, images, prices, stock and identifiers. Fix flagged issues quickly, keep your feed in sync with your site, and improve titles, images and reviews to show up more often.
